Abode Residencies, a specialist in student accommodation, is set to transform the former Barclays Bank in Alderley Edge into its new headquarters. With backing from Together, Abode plans to secure planning permission for this conversion. The project aims to develop high-tech, energy-efficient offices within the historic 120-year-old building on London Road.
Previous plans to convert the building into flats were withdrawn, allowing Abode to take charge of the Grade II-listed property. With architectural design by Sir Percy Worthington, the building was originally opened as the Union Bank in 1904, retaining features such as the village clock on its side.

Founder and CEO of Abode, Ashley Ladson, expressed enthusiasm for the building’s potential as a stunning company headquarters. He highlighted the building’s distinctive local red sandstone facade, ornate carvings, and well-preserved interiors. Ladson emphasised the intention to maintain the original panelling, cornicing, and stained-glass windows.
The renovation includes expanding the top floor into the attic, creating a two-storey space with a mezzanine floor leading to an outdoor roof garden. Ground and first floors will showcase a neo-classical design, featuring a mix of wood-paneled and glass partition walls, and a feature marble bar for coffee and tea facilities.
