Wildanet, supported by Gresham House, has entered a pivotal agreement with Nokia to boost broadband development in Cornwall.
This collaboration aims to significantly enhance internet connectivity across the region, benefiting both residents and businesses.
A Cornwall-based internet provider, Wildanet, has formed a strategic partnership with renowned telecoms giant, Nokia. This collaboration aims to expedite the deployment of broadband in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Under this agreement, Nokia will oversee the entire process of Wildanet’s next phase of network expansion—from planning and design through to construction and final handover.
The infrastructure company, Xantaro, plays a crucial role in supporting this venture. Xantaro is tasked with sourcing, building, and installing all communication cabinets required for the network. Besides infrastructure setup, Xantaro will also deliver professional services to enhance the quality and efficiency of Wildanet’s operations.
According to Justin Clark, Wildanet’s Chief Strategy and Technology Officer, this alliance signifies a major step forward. The company aims to achieve digital inclusion across the South West of England. Clark noted that the partnership would markedly speed up the network’s roll-out, benefitting thousands of homes and businesses.
Phil Siveter, the UK and Ireland Chief Executive for Nokia, highlighted the transformative potential of this collaboration. By combining Nokia’s extensive experience in network deployments with Wildanet’s local insights, both companies are prepared to significantly enhance the digital infrastructure in the region.
In 2023, Wildanet secured two government contracts amounting to £36 million to connect up to 19,250 homes and businesses in South West and mid-Cornwall. More recently, the firm was awarded an additional £41 million contract aimed at establishing new connections for 16,800 homes in East and West Cornwall, including areas on the Isles of Scilly.
This venture is expected to have a profound impact on local communities, offering improved access to digital services. The extended broadband coverage will not only aid residential areas but also enhance business operations across Cornwall, fostering economic growth and digital advancement. The increased connectivity is poised to facilitate better access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
The collaboration between Wildanet, Nokia, and Xantaro is set to redefine digital access in Cornwall.
This initiative is expected to deliver substantial advantages, bridging the digital divide and promoting economic growth.
