An East Lancashire garage owner has received approval to continue his business operations, overcoming initial challenges.
Despite expert advice to reject the planning application, councillors voted in favour of the garage’s ongoing use.
Tom McVicker’s application for retrospective planning permission to operate a vehicle repair business in a residential area was initially recommended for rejection by council officers. The proposal involved using the lower ground floor and yard of his home on Burnley Road, Accrington, which had been functioning as a garage since September 2021.
Cllr Dave Parkins played a key role in advocating for the garage, stepping down to argue against the officer’s recommendation. He noted the lack of previous complaints and highlighted Mr McVicker’s financial constraints.
In the end, the committee voted 8 to 3 in favour of the application, subject to agreed conditions with the chief planning officer.
However, some residents, including Ms Rawstron, remain dissatisfied, fearing long-term implications.
Cllr Kath Pratt expressed concerns about the decision reflecting emotional rather than logical considerations.
Conversely, objections highlight legitimate concerns about noise and privacy disruptions.
Councillors have ultimately provided Mr McVicker with the opportunity to continue his garage operations amid contrasting local opinions.
The decision highlights the delicate balance councils must achieve between supporting local business and preserving residential harmony.
As councils navigate these complex issues, the importance of comprehensive deliberation and stakeholder engagement cannot be overstated.
