In an extraordinary turn of events, a collection of Salvador Dali lithographs has been unearthed in a London garage. This unexpected discovery led to a fierce auction battle.
The prints, forgotten for nearly half a century, found new owners and garnered significant attention, rekindling interest in Dali’s work.
Eleven lithographs signed by the renowned Spanish surrealist, Salvador Dali, were found in a London garage. The discovery was made while the owner was cleaning out his lock-up in the affluent Mayfair area.
Originally purchased for £500 during a 1970s art gallery closing down sale, the prints had been forgotten for decades, only to resurface in spectacular fashion.
The auction event saw intense bidding, with each lot significantly exceeding its estimated price range of £500 to £700. The most desired piece, an abstract colour lithograph of nude figures, a limited edition signed by Dali himself, sold for an impressive £4,900.
According to Chris Kirkham, associate director of the auction house, Hansons Richmond, the demand was exceptional with worldwide interest.
Kirkham observed that the lithographs had a broad appeal due to their vibrant colours and commercial viability. He stated, “They sort of tick a lot of boxes. You’ve got a heavyweight artist that has an enduring appeal.”
Dali’s works are known for their surreal and captivating imagery, making them highly sought after in the art world.
The auction showcased how online bidding has democratized art sales, allowing more private buyers to participate. Kirkham highlighted that online platforms enable competitive pricing and greater accessibility.
“We have one lady that bought three today,” Kirkham noted, emphasizing the growing trend of private individuals purchasing art for personal enjoyment rather than for trade.
Salvador Dali, a prominent figure of surrealism, has left an indelible mark on the art world with his imaginative and eccentric works.
His 1929 portrait of French poet Paul Eluard sold for an astounding £13.5 million at Sotheby’s in London in 2011, illustrating the lasting value and appeal of his creations.
This auction not only highlighted the dormant value of forgotten art pieces but also underscored the timelessness of Dali’s work.
The rediscovery of these lithographs serves as a reminder of the hidden treasures that may still lie undiscovered in ordinary places.
The remarkable discovery of Salvador Dali lithographs in a London garage has not only captivated the art world but also demonstrated the enduring appeal of Dali’s work.
This event underscores the potential of forgotten art pieces to surprise and delight, reaffirming the timeless nature of great art.
