An exciting new attraction has opened its doors in Wiltshire, promising a unique skiing experience. The South Wilts Ski Club brings indoor skiing to the county for the first time, providing state-of-the-art facilities.
Spearheaded by Nick Jenkins, the founder of Moonpig, this venture not only addresses local demands for ski practice zones but also sets a new benchmark for indoor skiing facilities.
The Vision Behind South Wilts Ski Club
Nick Jenkins, well-known as the founder of Moonpig and a former Dragons’ Den investor, has embarked on a unique venture in Wiltshire. His motivation stemmed from a personal desire: his daughter’s need for a place to practise skiing between holiday seasons. This led to the creation of the South Wilts Ski Club, an indoor facility that occupies a former tractor barn at Bapton Manor Farm.
Innovative Skiing Experience
The facility features a specialist MaxxTracks indoor slope, one of only four available across the UK. This sophisticated slope can be adjusted in incline from 13 to 22 degrees and reaches speeds up to 30 kilometres an hour, mimicking real slope conditions. It provides an experience akin to skiing on a meticulously groomed piste. The club claims that an hour on the slope at full speed equates to skiing from the top of Everest to sea level.
Jenkins describes the surface as similar to a “very well-groomed piste,” but with the appearance of a plush carpet. This design ensures that the slope provides a slippery and authentic feeling, challenging even for seasoned skiers.
Exclusive and Personalised Sessions
South Wilts Ski Club emphasises exclusivity and personalised coaching. Each session is booked exclusively, allowing visitors to enjoy the slope’s facilities without interruptions from other groups. Up to eight people can book together, ensuring a private experience.
In-house instructor Craig Philpott provides one-on-one coaching, further enhancing the personalised experience. Each session is filmed, allowing skiers to review and refine their technique.
The club offers ski boots, helmets, and skis free of charge, enhancing its appeal to both beginners and seasoned skiers.
Beyond Skiing: Additional Facilities
The club features a comfortable chalet-style clubhouse where visitors can relax. Complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits are provided, adding to the welcoming atmosphere.
Although not currently offering snowboarding, Jenkins has hinted at future expansions to include this option. His vision is to enhance the club’s offerings and broaden its appeal.
Visitors appreciate the facility’s thoughtful details, such as the complimentary beverages and a relaxed setting, providing a holistic skiing experience.
Operational Details and Pricing
The club operates a flexible schedule, catering to different audiences. Sessions are available from midday to 8 pm on Wednesdays, from 11 am to 6 pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and from 10 am to 5 pm on weekends.
Pricing is competitive, with peak time sessions costing £30 per person for 30 minutes, and off-peak sessions priced at £18 per 30 minutes, with a block-booking discount available. This pricing structure is designed to accommodate a variety of budgets and encourage repeat visits.
Community Impact and Future Prospects
The opening of the South Wilts Ski Club has generated considerable local interest and excitement. Positioned as a family-friendly venue, it appeals to a broad demographic, from young novices to seasoned skiing enthusiasts.
Nick Jenkins’ investment in this project underscores his commitment to enhancing community facilities and providing unique recreational opportunities in Wiltshire.
With plans to potentially incorporate snowboarding, the club looks to broaden its offerings and maintain its position as a distinctive recreational facility in the region.
Grand Opening and Reception
The South Wilts Ski Club opened to the public on October 17, 2024. Initial feedback from visitors has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the unique experience and the quality of coaching offered.
