Inspired Global Cuisine is set to open a major food processing facility in Chadderton.
This development is expected to create hundreds of local jobs, marking a significant boost to the area.
Inspired Global Cuisine (IGC) is poised to make a significant economic footprint in Oldham with a new food processing hub. The development promises to generate between 550 to 760 jobs, delivering a much-needed boost to local employment. Of these, a substantial 200 jobs are expected to benefit residents directly impacted by previous job losses at the nearby Yodel distribution centre.
During a planning meeting, Councillor Peter Davies supported IGC’s warehouse extension proposal, highlighting its potential to create ‘good, decent jobs’. He noted that while the council lacks the financial capacity to independently stimulate employment, strategic planning initiatives like this are crucial. Davies expressed gratitude towards IGC and Ergo for their investment in Oldham’s community and economy.
The facility, occupying 369 Lydia Becker Way, spans over 33,000 square metres of warehousing space and includes an office setup of 10,000 square metres. It is backed by Ergo and provisioned with more than 300 car parking slots. The site has secured 24-hour operational permissions, underscoring its capacity to offer continuous employment opportunities. An IGC spokesperson confirmed that the proposed operations would generate approximately 550 full-time positions, with an eventual goal of 760 full-time equivalent jobs.
Oldham Council’s unanimous approval underscores its commitment to local economic development. Although primarily endorsed, the application faced some resistance due to concerns over noise and odour. These apprehensions were raised by local residents and are particularly pertinent due to the facility’s proximity to Radclyffe School and residential zones. Council members noted that any alterations to the building would require additional planning permissions.
With its extensive product lines, IGC supplies major supermarkets like Iceland, and its planned expansion is strategically significant. The company’s need for ‘flexible use’ permissions aligns with its aim to diversify production, meeting varied market demands for ready meals, soups, and sauces. This adaptability is expected to solidify its market presence and support its growth trajectory in the UK and internationally.
While the anticipated employment benefits are considerable, community concerns about environmental impacts remain. Oldham Council addressed these by stipulating conditions for operation to mitigate potential disturbances. Its decision reflects a careful balance between fostering economic growth and maintaining community welfare. Long-term, the council hopes that initiatives like this will attract further investments, enhancing Oldham’s profile as a commercial hub.
IGC’s initiative marks a significant commitment to Oldham, promising expansive employment and increased economic activity. Their decision to relocate and expand in this area reflects confidence in Oldham’s potential. It highlights a strategic move to leverage local talent, fostering community resilience, and economic sustainability.
With strategic investment and planning, Inspired Global Cuisine’s new facility marks a pivotal step in boosting Oldham’s economic landscape.
The future looks promising with potential growth in local employment and community development.
