Aldi has entered into a partnership with Shell to install Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers at 11 of its store locations across the UK. The aim of this collaboration is to offer an enhanced shopping experience by providing convenient charging facilities for customers with electric vehicles.
Four 50kW rapid chargers will be strategically installed in various locations, namely Hinckley, Cambuslang, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Paignton, Ulverston, Welshpool, Deal, and New Malden. The chargers are accessible through the Shell Recharge app, which provides information on charger location, availability, and the estimated cost of a charging session. Payment for the charging can be made via the app or through a contactless card, offering flexibility and convenience for users. Notably, there is no requirement for a subscription to use these chargers.
In terms of strategic objectives, Aldi plans to evaluate the feedback from customers regarding the initial installation in these 11 locations to assess the viability of expanding the programme across other store locations in the UK.
Bernie Williamson, the General Manager of Shell Mobility UK, has outlined an ambition for 90% of UK drivers to be within 10 minutes of a Shell rapid charger by 2030. This trial helps advance that objective by ensuring that Aldi customers can charge their vehicles during their shopping trips. An EV drivers survey conducted in 2023 by Shell revealed that 63% of respondents indicated that the availability of charge points significantly influences their shopping and travel decisions.
From Aldi’s perspective, George Brown, Aldi UK’s Real Estate Director, expressed the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility. He highlighted that offering rapid charging options aligns with Aldi’s sustainability goals and provides added convenience for customers seeking high-quality and affordable products while supporting an eco-friendlier lifestyle.
The partnership between Aldi and Shell represents a strategic step towards increasing the accessibility of EV chargers in the UK, thus promoting sustainable practices.
