In a consumer taste test, Aldi’s baked beans have been ranked higher than well-known brands.
- Aldi’s Bramwells baked beans scored 76% for appearance, aroma, and flavour.
- Branston beans were a close second with 75%, praised for their sauce texture.
- Co-op and Asda received favourable scores of 74% and 73%, respectively.
- Heinz and others followed, with M&S and Morrisons at the bottom.
In a comprehensive taste test conducted by Which?, Aldi’s own-label baked beans emerged as the consumer favourite, outshining renowned brands such as Heinz and Branston. The test involved 66 consumers who evaluated various baked bean products in a blind tasting process. Aldi’s Bramwells baked beans received the highest accolade with a score of 76%, being particularly noted for their appearance, aroma, and flavour intensity. A significant 80% of the participants found the texture of Aldi’s beans to be ‘just right’.
Closely following Aldi, Branston’s offering scored 75%. Notably, 89% of those who tasted Branston beans were impressed by the texture of the tomato sauce, demonstrating the competitive nature of the supermarket and branded offerings in this category.
Other supermarket brands also performed well, with Co-op and Asda’s baked beans scoring 74% and 73%, respectively. Their scores reflected a strong appreciation for the products, though they came slightly short of matching Aldi’s consumer approval.
Heinz Baked Beans, a famous staple, scored 72%. While tasters were generally satisfied with its flavour strength, there were criticisms regarding its aroma and sauce consistency, with some finding the sauce overly thin. Both Heinz and Waitrose received an equal score of 72%, placing them behind the leaders.
Within a similar range, Sainsbury’s beans achieved a 71% score, and Tesco followed with 70%. At the lower end of the spectrum, Morrisons and M&S scored 68% and 67%, respectively. Although Morrisons’ beans were liked for their texture by two-thirds of consumers, half were disappointed with the flavour and sweetness levels. Similarly, M&S beans’ texture was appreciated, though a third of consumers desired a sweeter taste profile.
Aldi has successfully captured consumer preference by leading in a competitive baked beans taste test.
