Aldi is transitioning over 30% of its HGVs to eco-friendly fuels.
- This move by Aldi focuses on cutting carbon emissions significantly.
- 160 HGVs at key distribution centres are part of this change.
- Aldi aims to reduce its carbon footprint by 15,400 tonnes annually.
- Plans to expand this initiative across the entire fleet are underway.
Aldi has announced a major step in its sustainability efforts by converting over 30% of its heavy goods vehicle (HGV) fleet to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuels. This initiative is aimed at significantly reducing the retailer’s carbon footprint. By making this shift, Aldi targets crucial emission reductions at its Cardiff, Swindon, and Neston distribution centres.
More than 160 HGVs will transition to HVO fuel, a move that is expected to result in a reduction of approximately 15,400 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions annually. This represents a significant commitment to eco-friendly operations and aligns with Aldi’s broader sustainability goals.
Aldi’s National Sustainability Director, Liz Foz, affirmed this strategic direction, stating, “Switching to HVO fuels on our lorry fleet aligns with our long-term sustainability goals and reflects our commitment to reducing our carbon emissions. We are always looking for ways to continue our efforts to drive positive change across the business and this move in particular is a significant milestone for Aldi.”
The potential impact is even greater if this initiative is rolled out across Aldi’s entire fleet of more than 550 HGVs, which could further cut emissions by an additional 55,100 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.
In addition to its sustainability achievements, Aldi has recently announced an £800 million investment aimed at accelerating its expansion throughout Britain. This substantial financial commitment underscores the retailer’s robust growth, highlighted by a £2.4 billion increase in sales to a total of £17.9 billion in the last year, marking its highest-ever sales growth.
Aldi’s transition to eco-friendly fuels for its HGV fleet marks a significant stride towards sustainability and emission reduction.
