Aldi has reached a significant milestone, achieving approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its emissions reduction goals. This approval places Aldi alongside other prominent UK retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons in setting science-based climate targets.
The discount retailer has committed to near-term objectives, seeking to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 52% by the year 2030, using 2021 as the baseline. In addition, it aims for a 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions using 2022 as the starting point.
Looking further ahead, Aldi’s long-term targets are equally ambitious. By 2035, the retailer plans to cut its absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions significantly, continuing from the 2021 baseline year. Moreover, the retailer is committed to a substantial 90% reduction in Scope 3 GHG emissions by 2050.
The Aldi South Group, which includes Aldi UK, underlines its pioneering role as one of the first international food retailers to have its entire value chain’s net-zero targets validated by the SBTi. This validation underscores Aldi’s unwavering dedication to sustainability.
To achieve these targets, Aldi has outlined comprehensive initiatives focusing on decarbonisation and emission reduction. The retailer aims to tackle Scope 1 and 2 emissions by optimising store and logistics operations. To address Scope 3 emissions, Aldi intends to collaborate extensively with suppliers, enhancing their on-farm practices and improving upstream transportation decarbonisation.
Aldi UK National Sustainability Director, Liz Fox, emphasises the retailer’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “We are always looking for new ways to minimise our carbon footprint and these revised targets show just how seriously we take our commitment to operating sustainably here in the UK and internationally.”
Aldi’s approved emissions reduction goals demonstrate its resolute pursuit of sustainability, aligning with global standards.
