- The programme forms part of Asda’s broader efforts to collaborate with various food redistribution partners.
Asda is expanding its collaboration with Too Good To Go, the world’s largest surplus food marketplace, across almost 1,000 locations, including Asda supermarkets, Express stores, and food service sites. The partnership allows any surplus but edible food to be sold to app users as ‘Surprise Bags’. Each bag, priced at £3.30, contains food items valued at a minimum of £9. These items range from ready meals and bakery products to fruit, salads, and produce with use-by dates such as dairy and meat.
The initiative follows a successful trial in varied Asda locations, which exhibited a positive impact on reducing food waste. Since 2021, the partnership has saved over two million kilograms of food from wastage. Asda supermarkets and their associated food service outlets like Leon, Greggs, Sbarro, and Subway, will have tailored pricing for their Surprise Bags based on contents, which could include meals and desserts.
Sam Dickson, Vice President for Commercial Strategy at Asda, expressed delight in broadening the reach of Too Good To Go across multiple sites. He emphasised Asda’s commitment to reducing food waste through creative solutions and recognised the significant customer uptake that underscores the programme’s effectiveness. This engagement with Too Good To Go enhances Asda’s array of initiatives aimed at food redistribution.
Additionally, Asda continues to invest in similar sustainable practices, such as their ‘back of store’ food donation programme, created in collaboration with charities like FareShare and local food-sharing app Olio. This expansion is a testament to Asda’s dedication to building a comprehensive portfolio of strategies to prevent food waste and support community-oriented solutions.
Asda’s expanded partnership with Too Good To Go signifies a crucial step towards innovative food waste management.
