Asda has reported a significant uplift in sales for the second quarter, with like-for-like sales rising by 9.6%. This growth is largely attributed to the popularity of its low-cost product line, Just Essentials, which recorded an 87% increase in sales compared to the previous year. Since its introduction in May 2022, this range has attracted over 22 million consumers.
In the broader market landscape, Just Essentials has established itself as a leader in the value brand sector, boasting a 20.2% market share. Co-owner Mohsin Issa highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting families facing financial pressures, noting that Asda has locked prices on over 500 everyday items and reduced prices on more than 200 own-label products by an average of 9%. These reductions span across various categories including fresh produce, staple foods, and ready meals.
In addition to the success of its Just Essentials line, Asda’s clothing and general merchandise segments have outpaced the wider market. Clothing sales, under the George brand, grew by 2.8%, thanks to strong full-price sales. General merchandise saw a 6.3% rise, supported by the success of promotions such as the ‘Big Asda Toyshop’.
Asda’s online operations continue to perform robustly, securing its position as the UK’s second-largest online supermarket. Throughout the quarter, the company processed an average of 800,000 orders weekly. Furthermore, Asda is advancing the integration of 119 convenience stores acquired from The Co-op and is set to complete the £2.27 billion acquisition of the UK and Irish estate from parent company EG Group in the coming months.
Asda’s strategic focus on value ranges and diverse offerings continues to yield positive results across its sales channels.
