- Participation involves employees from all 311 B&Q stores, volunteering both time and resources.
- Each store donates up to £1,000 in products, alongside manpower to complete local projects.
- Past collaborations have supported over 2,000 local causes, emphasising social responsibility.
- The initiative also includes redistributing surplus through the Community Reuse programme.
This autumn, B&Q and Neighbourly have partnered once again for the annual Community Days volunteering initiative. Employees from all 311 B&Q stores in the UK and Ireland are set to engage in this charitable endeavour. They will volunteer their time and skills to carry out essential DIY projects for local charities.
Each participating store will supply not only volunteer teams but also contribute up to £1,000 worth of B&Q products necessary for these projects. The activities range from renovating community centres to creating garden spaces and improving facilities for those in need, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing community welfare.
Since the collaboration began in 2019, B&Q employees have supported more than 2,000 local causes. For example, B&Q personnel have accumulated over 200 volunteering hours with Blackpool & The Fylde Street Angels, a charity devoted to assisting individuals facing homelessness, addiction, or exploitation.
Richard Cooper, a store manager at B&Q Blackpool, stated, “The store team loves getting out into the community to give back and share some of our DIY skills. We’ve supported Blackpool and Fylde Street angels for our Community Day project for the last couple of years, they are an amazing charity. This year we’re helping to renovate the supported housing block, Angels Rest, to brighten up the communal spaces and make the place feel more homely.”
Additionally, B&Q runs the Community Reuse programme in partnership with Neighbourly, redistributing surplus materials and products to community groups, charities, and schools. To date, this initiative has distributed 725 tonnes of surplus products, reflecting efforts to decrease waste while bolstering community support.
Jo Curtis, a community manager at B&Q, has highlighted these efforts as a testament to B&Q’s social responsibility and commitment to community collaboration, aiming to transform community spaces. Meanwhile, Steve Butterworth, CEO of Neighbourly, emphasised their role in supporting local campaigns close to B&Q stores, enhancing neighbourhoods through meaningful partnerships.
The partnership between B&Q and Neighbourly exemplifies a successful model of corporate social responsibility and community engagement.
