JD Sports has revealed that Suzi Williams will step down as the chair of its remuneration committee on 1 November. Williams, who joined JD Sports in May 2022, significantly contributed to the group by leading the design and implementation of a new remuneration policy and operating structure. This development was publicised in a statement from JD Sports, highlighting Williams’ role in completing the foundational phase of remuneration governance change for the organisation.
Williams explained that the time was right for her to hand over to a new chair due to her expanding commitments and the successful implementation of the fresh remuneration policy. She stated, “Having completed the foundational phase of remuneration governance change for the group,” it was an opportune moment to transition leadership.
The role of the remuneration committee chair will be assumed by Angela Luger on 1 October. Luger joined the board and the committee in June 2023. Her prior experience includes chairing the remuneration committees of both the Manchester Airport Group and SCS, marking her as well-prepared for this new responsibility.
Additionally, Darren Shapland is set to replace Luger as the chair of JD Sports Fashion ESG committee on 1 October 2024. Shapland, who became a board member in June 2023, has been a part of the ESG committee since its inception. This transition reflects JD Sports’ commitment to maintaining robust governance structures.
Andy Higginson, the chair of JD Sports, commended Williams for her contributions, noting her efforts in achieving much-improved shareholder support for the remuneration policies. He acknowledged her as a valued colleague who played a pivotal role in the swift normalisation of remuneration policy and governance structures within the group.
The transitions in JD Sports’ governance roles highlight a significant evolution in their corporate strategy, emphasizing strengthened structures and leadership.
