Getir is implementing significant workforce reductions as part of strategic operational changes.
- The company plans to lay off 2,500 employees, exceeding 10% of its global workforce.
- These measures align with a shift in demand in the post-pandemic grocery delivery market.
- Getir intends to refocus its resources by exiting certain European markets.
- Fundraising efforts are being launched to strengthen operations in key regions.
In response to shifting market dynamics and decreased demand in the grocery delivery sector post-pandemic, Getir has announced a reduction of its workforce by 2,500 employees globally, which represents more than 10% of its current team of 23,000 individuals. This move affects a range of roles including couriers, pickers, as well as corporate staff.
A spokesperson for Getir stated, ‘Decisions like these are never taken lightly. However, Getir is determined to do right by all employees affected by the process in line with its values and in full compliance with local laws. Getir is very grateful to all colleagues for their hard work, dedication, and significant contributions to the business.’
Additionally, Getir is consolidating its geographical focus in Europe by ceasing operations in Spain, Italy, and Portugal. This strategic realignment is aimed at focusing financial resources on countries where the company perceives higher potential for profitability and sustainable growth, such as the UK, Turkey, Germany, the Netherlands, and the US.
The company is seeking to bolster its financial position by launching a new fundraising campaign in the UK, led by Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund. This initiative aims to raise approximately $500 million to support its continued operations and strategic objectives in promising markets.
These recent developments follow a series of strategic closures of dark stores in various locations across the UK, such as Wales, South West England, Birmingham, and London, earlier this year. Getir cited the need to optimise its store network following its acquisition of rival Gorillas.
The announcement of these layoffs came shortly after Getir’s UK executive, Chris Chaaya, departed the company amidst prior workforce reductions in March, where approximately 300 UK-based positions were eliminated.
Getir remains committed to leading the grocery delivery sector while navigating challenging market conditions through strategic workforce and operational adjustments.
