Harrods’ current managing director, Michael Ward, has formally apologised in relation to sexual abuse claims against the store’s former proprietor, Mohamed Al Fayed. In a statement to the BBC, Ward expressed, “I am very dreadfully sorry for what has happened with Al Fayed.”
Mohamed Al Fayed, who owned Harrods from 1985 to 2010, has been accused of serious misconduct, including assault and attempted assault, following revelations from a BBC documentary. These claims have come to light after years of concealment, with numerous women stepping forward since the documentary’s airing in September.
Ward, who worked with Al Fayed until 2010, maintained that he was previously unaware of any such allegations. As Harrods faces over 250 claims for compensation from women who accuse Al Fayed of misconduct, the retailer is diligently working to address these accusations.
The luxury department store’s ownership has recently changed hands. The new proprietors have publicly stated their horror at the allegations, underscoring their intent to conduct a comprehensive review. They have committed to investigating whether any current employees were involved and have pledged to rectify past oversights.
The BBC sought to interview Mr. Ward to explore the extent of knowledge among Harrods’ senior personnel regarding the alleged misconduct during Al Fayed’s ownership. However, this request was declined, and Mr Ward conveyed that the retailer had “nothing further to add.”
The situation continues to develop as Harrods addresses these historic allegations with a commitment to accountability and transparency.
