Harrods’ current managing director, Michael Ward, has formally apologised in relation to sexual abuse claims against the store’s former proprietor, Mohamed Al Fayed. In a statement to the BBC, Ward expressed, “I am very dreadfully sorry for what has happened with Al Fayed.”
Mohamed Al Fayed, who owned Harrods from 1985 to 2010, has been accused of serious misconduct, including assault and attempted assault, following revelations from a BBC documentary. These claims have come to light after years of concealment, with numerous women stepping forward since the documentary’s airing in September.
Ward, who worked with Al Fayed until 2010, maintained that he was previously unaware of any such allegations. As Harrods faces over 250 claims for compensation from women who accuse Al Fayed of misconduct, the retailer is diligently working to address these accusations.
