Iceland has introduced a new ‘Local’ convenience store in Wolverhampton, marking a significant development in its retail offerings. This new format is managed by SGN Retail and is strategically located on a Texaco garage forecourt, providing a unique shopping experience by combining refueling and retail services. The site includes a Costcutter store, consolidating convenience for customers by allowing them to purchase fuel and groceries in one visit.
The operational model of Iceland Local is designed to streamline the shopping process. Customers can access the store through a single entrance and make purchases at a unified point of sale. This setup enhances operational efficiency and provides ease for shoppers buying petrol, food, beverages, and other goods.
Within the store, customers will find chilled and ambient aisles primarily supplied by Costcutter. The Iceland Local also features a dedicated frozen foods section, offering Iceland’s own-label products alongside items from collaborations with brands such as Slimming World, Myprotein, and Harry Ramsden’s. This diverse range caters to varying consumer needs and preferences.
The launch of Iceland Local signifies Iceland Foods’ strategic move to provide its product range in non-traditional locations, complementing its existing high street and retail park stores. As stated by Justin Addison, Iceland Foods’ International and Wholesale Director, this concept provides an innovative opportunity for customers to pick up Iceland products while refueling their vehicles, thus expanding the accessibility of their offerings.
Following the successful opening of the Wolverhampton store, Iceland plans to continue rolling out this innovative concept. Previously, in March 2022, Iceland expanded into the convenience sector with its Swift store model. The company now plans further openings of the Iceland Local format in the coming months as part of its ongoing strategy to diversify and meet consumer demand.
Iceland’s new ‘Local’ store format represents a strategic expansion in its convenience offerings, enhancing customer accessibility and operational efficiency.
