Independent retailers express discontent over the sudden launch of Fynch-Hatton’s UK website.
- The site went live without informing UK stockists, causing frustration among retailers.
- Fynch-Hatton’s UK agent, Sardine Agencies, partnered in the site’s development.
- The new platform seeks to showcase Fynch-Hatton’s complete collection independently.
- Issues arose as no UK stockists are listed on the new website.
Several independent retailers have expressed dismay at the recent launch of the UK website for Fynch-Hatton, a German brand. They were surprised to learn about the website’s existence only after it went live, without any prior notification from Sardine Agencies, Fynch-Hatton’s UK partner.
The website, fynch-hatton.co.uk, was registered on 22 February 2024 and aims to operate as a Direct-To-Consumer (DTC) platform, allowing the brand to engage directly with UK customers. However, this development was not communicated during buying appointments for the Spring Summer 2025 orders, leaving some retailers feeling blindsided by the move.
One retailer, who wished to remain anonymous, criticised the website for failing to list the names of UK stockists, which they said added to their frustration. Another retailer commented on their surprise at the site’s sudden appearance, remarking that there was no prior indication of such a platform during their purchasing decisions.
Glenn Chamberlin, a director at Sardine Agencies, acknowledged the frustrations but highlighted the necessity for Fynch-Hatton to secure a stable online presence in the UK post-Brexit. “Private conversations will always remain confidential,” Chamberlin stated, reiterating that Sardine Agencies could not promise that Fynch-Hatton would refrain from direct sales in such a vital market.
The objective behind the new UK site was to provide a dedicated platform to present the complete Fynch-Hatton collection in a manner not feasible through third-party accounts. Chamberlin explained that a soft launch occurred two weeks prior, with new Autumn Winter 2024 styles being introduced progressively.
The UK site currently stocks only menswear, with plans to expand to womenswear. Chamberlin reassured that both Sardine Agencies and Fynch-Hatton are committed to maintaining the brand’s value and existing partnerships built over the years.
While the absence of UK stockists’ listing remains an open issue, another trusted retailer shared their disappointment at being uninformed but appreciated Sardine Agencies’ apology for the oversight. Chamberlin remains confident that the new platform will ultimately benefit all stakeholders, particularly those focused on physical store sales.
The launch of Fynch-Hatton’s UK website has stirred unease among independent retailers due to a lack of prior communication.
