Lidl has proactively revised its climate targets, marking a significant step towards its sustainability and net-zero objectives. The company aims to achieve a 70% reduction in its absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 from its 2019 levels, demonstrating a substantial commitment to environmental stewardship. Since 2019, Lidl has already managed to reduce these emissions by 52%, underlining its capability to meet the newly set goals.
The retailer has also set ambitious targets for Scope 3 emissions, which constitute over 90% of its total emissions. Lidl plans to cut these emissions by 35% by 2034, taking 2022 as a baseline. This includes a strategic focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, forestry, and other land use (FLAG) by 42.4% within the same timeframe. Such targets highlight Lidl’s comprehensive approach to tackling emissions throughout its value chain.
To achieve these targets, Lidl emphasises the importance of collaboration, particularly with its suppliers. The company has made notable progress with its strategic suppliers, who are responsible for the majority of its product-related Scope 3 emissions. These suppliers are expected to have climate targets that align with the Science Based Targets Initiative by 2026. This collaboration will be central to Lidl’s efforts in developing more sustainable products.
Lidl GB’s CEO, Ryan McDonnell, reiterated the importance of addressing climate change, stating, “Tackling climate change is a huge priority for us at Lidl; our commitment to achieving net-zero through our new quantified targets demonstrates the scale of our ambition.” This commitment reflects Lidl’s intention to offer a sustainable product range at competitive prices, ensuring environmental considerations are balanced with consumer affordability.
Lidl’s reinforced climate targets highlight its serious commitment to sustainability and collaboration in reducing emissions.
