Lidl has launched a new Retail Leadership degree apprenticeship scheme with Kingston University, welcoming 51 apprentices from over 5,000 applicants.
- This four-year programme combines academic study and practical experience, offering apprentices a substantial salary progression from nearly £26,000 to £46,000.
- Apprentices will alternate their time between in-store experience, university studies, and sessions at Lidl’s head office.
- The scheme aligns with Lidl’s strategy to invest in future retail leaders, complementing its existing graduate programme.
- Both Lidl and Kingston University recognise the scheme as a significant step toward addressing skills gaps in the retail sector.
Lidl, in collaboration with Kingston University, has introduced its inaugural Retail Leadership degree apprenticeship scheme. This programme stands out due to its integration of academic learning with practical retail experience, specifically designed for school leavers eager to enter the retail sector. It received an overwhelming response, with over 5,000 applications for just 51 available spots.
The apprenticeship is structured as a four-year endeavour, during which apprentices begin with a starting salary of close to £26,000. By the end of the programme, participants have the potential to earn up to £46,000 annually. This initiative not only provides a competitive income but also a comprehensive understanding of the retail industry through hands-on experience.
Participants will divide their time between practical in-store work, academic coursework at Kingston University, and immersive sessions at Lidl’s head office, Lidl House. This structured approach ensures a well-rounded skill set, making graduates of the programme valuable assets to the retail industry.
In parallel with this new apprenticeship, Lidl continues its commitment to nurturing talent through its annual graduate scheme. This programme recruits individuals across various functions such as HR, supply chain, and warehouse operations. Stephanie Rogers, Lidl GB’s Chief Human Resources Officer, expressed excitement about welcoming over 100 talented individuals into these opportunities.
Professor Sanka Sivarajah from Kingston University emphasised the importance of this partnership in bridging existing skills gaps. The programme aims to equip students with future-ready skills, including digital marketing insights and essential financial competencies, necessary for effective management in large organisations.
The collaboration between Lidl and Kingston University marks a pivotal move towards developing well-rounded retail leaders through targeted education and practical experience.
