Independent department store chain Morleys has announced the appointment of Allan Winstanley as Chief Executive Officer with his tenure commencing in January 2025. This appointment follows the resignation of Nigel Blow in July, who served as CEO for eight years. Blow’s departure paved the way for Winstanley’s new role.
Nigel Blow, former Harrods executive, was initially appointed as CEO of Fenwick, a major family-owned department store in the UK. However, Fenwick withdrew the offer two weeks before Blow was expected to begin, leaving him “shocked” at the unexpected decision after weeks of preparatory meetings with the company’s executives and shareholders.
Morleys, a historic retail entity founded in 1880, currently operates eight department stores, with seven situated within the Greater London area. The chain continues to be a significant player in the retail landscape.
Allan Winstanley’s appointment marks his return to the UK after his role in the strategic turnaround of Myer department stores in Australia. His career path includes significant leadership positions at renowned retailers such as Sears in the US, De Bijenkorf in the Netherlands, and a decade with the UK’s House of Fraser. Winstanley initially built his career at Marks & Spencer and held director roles at The British Fashion Council and The UK Fragrance Foundation.
Winstanley’s extensive international experience is expected to bring valuable insights and drive for Morleys’ continued success in the competitive retail sector.
Winstanley’s appointment signals a new era for Morleys as it aims to leverage his global expertise for future growth.
