- The initiative supports a circular economy, reflecting M&S’s sustainability commitment.
M&S has significantly broadened the reach of its Beauty Takeback Scheme to include 100 stores nationwide, aiming to increase accessibility for UK customers. This move aligns with the company’s Plan A roadmap, which targets achieving Net Zero environmental impact. New locations embracing this eco-friendly initiative include prominent retail spots such as Birmingham Bullring, Cardiff, and Inverness.
Initially introduced in June 2023, the scheme encourages consumers to bring in used beauty packaging made from plastic or aluminium. The collected items can include bottles, tubes, caps, pumps, and tubs from any retail brand. These can be deposited in dedicated collection boxes within M&S stores, specifically located in the beauty sections.
The initiative has proven its effectiveness and popularity since its inception, with over 1.6 tonnes of beauty packaging already processed. This substantial amount of recycled material contributes to reducing landfill and demonstrates the success of M&S’s initiative in promoting sustainability.
Katharine Beacham, head of sustainability for clothing & home at M&S, highlighted the scheme’s role in fostering a circular economy. She stated that the introduction of these circularity services is crucial in providing a convenient recycling option for M&S customers. Beacham expressed enthusiasm about expanding the scheme, enabling more customers to recycle effortlessly and give new life to their empty beauty packaging.
M&S’s expansion of the Beauty Takeback Scheme illustrates its ongoing dedication to promoting sustainability and reducing waste through strategic initiatives.
