M&S is making significant strides in sustainable agriculture by employing drones and robotic tractors in its parsnip production. This approach, a trailblazing effort within the UK retail sector, is part of M&S’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions associated with agriculture by enhancing crop quality and output.
Back in March, M&S initiated this project in Yorkshire in collaboration with Huntapac, a root vegetable supplier. The project utilises two types of drones and robotic technology for tasks such as bed forming, weeding, and planting. These advancements not only aid in maintaining and monitoring crop health but also play a crucial role in locking carbon into the soil, which is vital for environmental conservation.
The deployment of these technologies introduces a reduction in the use of diesel, replacing it with more environmentally-friendly green fertilisers. This reflects M&S’s commitment to finding lower-impact farming solutions in its pursuit of sustainability.
The anticipated benefits extend beyond reducing the carbon footprint. There is an expectation of enhanced quality and quantity in crop yields, contributing to the retailer’s supply chain efficiency. The first batch of these autonomously farmed parsnips is set to be available in selected stores from November.
Andrew Clappen, M&S Food technical director, stated that agriculture is a notable contributor to emissions. He emphasised the importance of innovating farming methods to support M&S’s ‘Plan A’ roadmap towards achieving net zero emissions. This aligns with their goal to foster more highly skilled job opportunities and attract new talent into the agricultural sector.
