One Stop has commenced a strategic partnership with Whywaste, a Swedish company specialising in food technology, to address food waste in its stores. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to incorporate sustainable practices within the retail sector.
The technology provided by Whywaste offers a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution. It enables retailers to accurately track product expiry dates and employ strategic markdowns, aiming to sell products before they become unsellable, thus reducing waste.
Initial trials conducted by One Stop in 2022 across four stores demonstrated a notable reduction in food waste by an average of 14.3%. This success has prompted One Stop to extend the use of this technology to its entire network of 1,000 stores.
Richard Turton, the Head of Supply Chain at One Stop, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating a strong commitment to minimising both food waste and environmental impact. He emphasised how the technology allows for fair-priced markdowns thus offering customers savings on near-expiry products.
Whywaste has previously worked with other retailers, such as Asda and Spar, to deploy similar technologies. Reports from Spar indicate that using this digital date-checking system led to waste reductions of up to 40%, illustrating its efficacy in varying retail contexts.
This partnership illustrates One Stop’s dedication to sustainability and its proactive approach to reducing food waste.
