One Stop has formed a collaboration with the global resource management company, Veolia, to advance its sustainability efforts through a novel recycling initiative. This partnership aims to recycle more than 380,000 own-label milk bottles annually from One Stop’s stores, underlining a commitment to environmental responsibility.
Veolia will carry out weekly collections of milk bottles from One Stop’s distribution centres. These bottles, sourced from vending machines and staff refreshments, will be transported to Veolia’s Dagenham Plastic Facility. Here, they undergo a process of washing, shredding, and conversion into pellets. These plastic pellets can then be utilised to create new milk bottles, effectively completing a closed-loop recycling process.
Amriene Kalsi, One Stop’s sustainability manager, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative. “We’re so pleased to be working with Veolia on this new initiative. It’s certainly another key step towards our goal of increasing recycling within our own operations, contributing to our target of meeting net zero by 2050.” Kalsi’s statement reflects the retailer’s strategic focus on sustainable practices and long-term environmental goals.
Simon Futcher, Veolia’s commercial business development director, highlighted the ecological benefits of the collaboration. “Veolia is delighted to be working closely with One Stop to recycle their milk bottles, ensuring we reduce their carbon impact on the environment. Turning used milk bottles into fresh ones replaces the need for raw materials and saves 67% of carbon emissions at the same time.” This initiative aligns with Veolia’s purpose of ecological transformation and enhances its portfolio of sustainable solutions.
This recycling programme is part of One Stop’s broader sustainability journey. Recently, the retailer has initiated other eco-friendly measures, such as replacing green milk bottle lids with clear, recyclable alternatives following a trial with milk supplier Müller. Additionally, the retailer has teamed up with Swedish food tech company Whywaste to tackle food waste across its stores, supporting its ambitious net zero target by 2050.
One Stop’s partnership with Veolia epitomises a proactive approach towards sustainability and environmental stewardship.
