Philip Browne, a distinguished menswear retailer in Norwich, is closing its doors after 38 years of operation. The store has been highly regarded for its contribution to fashion by offering first collections from iconic designers like Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gaultier.
The closure comes in the wake of the acquisition by Frasers Group, which took ownership from JD Sports Fashion in March. This acquisition was part of Frasers’ strategic expansion in the fashion retail sector, which has seen it actively acquiring independent stores.
Philip Browne currently offers a range of premium brands including Moncler, Salomon, Canada Goose, Snow Peak, and Asics. Despite the closure, the store remains operational for the time being, although it is expected to shut down next month.
The future of its retail space at 3 Guildhall Hill, Norwich, remains unclear. However, Frasers Group recently launched a new 20,000 sq ft Flannels store in the nearby Chantry Place shopping centre, symbolising its continued investment in the area.
Frasers Group has been expanding its portfolio by acquiring several fashion independents this year, including Northampton’s Thackerays and Sunderland’s Aphrodite, both of which have closed post-acquisition. Similarly, premium menswear retailer John Anthony has closed three out of five sites after being taken over by Frasers.
Frasers Group’s CFO, Chris Wootton, remarked that the group has shifted from operating boutiques to becoming a national retailer. He acknowledged that more acquisitions could occur if locations are deemed suitable, but decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis.
Frasers Group did not comment on the specific closure of Philip Browne. However, its strategy reflects a broader trend of consolidating the luxury retail market in the UK.
Philip Browne’s closure marks a significant change in the Norwich retail landscape, influenced by Frasers Group’s strategic acquisitions.
