Poundland, a leading UK discount retailer, has announced plans to increase the number of its products priced at £1 or less, responding to changes in budget taxes. Starting from November, the retailer will enhance its current list of £1 items from 1,000 to 1,500 across all UK locations. This move intends to provide consumers with more affordable options on essential goods.
The initiative will see essential products such as milk, bread, sugar, and eggs reduced and locked at a price of £1. Specific reductions include two-litre bottles of milk, now £1 instead of £1.45, 800g loaves of Kingsmill or Brace’s bread from £1.25 to £1, and six free-range eggs reduced from £1.50. This price lock aims to ease the burden on household grocery budgets.
In addition to staple items, Poundland plans to introduce fresh produce stands in more than 520 UK stores. These stands will feature popular fruits like apples and oranges, each available for £1. This addition will further support customers in accessing healthy food choices at lower costs.
Beyond everyday essentials, around a third of Poundland’s typical core range will also see price reductions to £1 or less, enhancing the store’s reputation for value offerings. The roll-out coincides with the launch of Poundland’s “12 deals of Christmas,” highlighting various festive essentials including LED lights and gift bags, aiming to provide customers with holiday savings.
According to CJ Antal-Smith, Poundland’s commercial director, most retailers shift focus to high-priced items during the festive period. However, Poundland maintains its approach by emphasising the significance of accessible everyday essentials, which are crucial for sustaining households during economic tightening.
Poundland’s strategic expansion of its £1 product range reflects its commitment to affordability amid economic challenges.
