- This marks the first stage in a broader revitalisation initiative for the area.
- The revival aims to bring back community enjoyment and preserve town heritage.
The historic Allders department store, a cultural landmark in Croydon since its inception in 1862, is on the cusp of a major redevelopment. Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) has secured approval from Croydon Council to proceed with the restoration of this iconic building. This approval sets in motion a phased scheme to rejuvenate the site, aiming to infuse new life into a cornerstone of local heritage.
The redevelopment involves the introduction of five retail units, varying between 450 and 1,300 square feet, and two food and beverage outlets, each occupying 450 square feet. While structural transformations are minimal, the building’s frontage will be refurbished to reflect its historical significance and modern utility.
URW’s Head of UK Development, Penny Cameron, emphasised the importance of the project, noting it as the ‘first step of many’ to rejuvenate Croydon’s beloved landmark. This development strives to provide a space for community engagement and enjoyment while maintaining the historical fabric of the area.
The Allders building has been closed since 2013, following the company’s entry into administration. Nevertheless, it remains a symbol of local pride, and its restoration is seen as pivotal to enhancing Croydon’s town centre.
This initiative is part of URW’s larger strategy to revitalise Croydon’s retail landscape, following the dissolution of a previous £1.4 billion redevelopment venture with Hammerson. With URW now holding a full stake, the focus shifts towards sustainable growth and community integration. The local mayor, Jason Perry, has expressed firm support, recognising the critical role this development will play in rekindling a sense of place and pride within the community.
The redevelopment of the Allders building marks a significant step toward reviving Croydon’s town centre and maintaining its historical essence.
