This new initiative is set to replace the traditional sleeved plastic bottles with recyclable cardboard cartons, aiming to eliminate 22 tonnes of plastic waste annually. The transition to cardboard packaging is available across various product lines, including tropical super concentrated and bio super concentrated detergents.
The introduction of this packaging is not only environmentally friendly but also efficient. Each carton is 35% lighter than its plastic counterpart, making it easier for consumers to handle and recycle. Additionally, the shift to cardboard will remove thirteen lorries from the road each year, substantially cutting down carbon emissions for Sainsbury’s detergent range by half.
Alongside the new packaging, Sainsbury’s has improved the detergent formula to be super concentrated. This reformulation means that less detergent is needed for each wash, thus providing five additional washes per carton. This change is part of Sainsbury’s broader strategy to reduce plastic usage and enhance product efficiency.
This packaging change follows other sustainability initiatives by Sainsbury’s, such as the launch of a refillable handwash pouch that uses 85% less plastic. Furthermore, the switch to aluminium for coffee pods contributed significantly to reducing plastic consumption, cutting over 10 million pieces of plastic each year.
These steps are in line with Sainsbury’s ambitious target to halve its own-brand plastic packaging by the year 2025, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
