The 2024 Sainsbury’s Christmas advert, launched on 1 November, prominently features the much-loved character of the BFG from Roald Dahl’s stories, alongside a supermarket worker named Sophie. The storyline kicks off with the BFG slicing a ‘snozzcumber,’ dreaming up tastier alternatives, such as ‘prawn coat-tails’ and ‘beef welly-boot.’
As the advertisement progresses, the giant inquires, ‘Hey Sainsbury’s, how can we make this Christmas a bit more… phizz-whizzing?’ This marks the introduction of Sophie, donned in her Sainsbury’s gear, ready to assist. In a comical twist, a giant sneeze from the BFG sends snowflakes flying and sets off nearby car alarms, revealing his presence.
Together, they embark on a journey to gather festive ingredients from Sainsbury’s suppliers, showcasing products like salmon, Brussels sprouts, and Stilton cheese. The ad provides a glimpse of an elaborate feast set in the BFG’s dream cave, laden with delicious offerings from Sainsbury’s, including a roasted carrot galette and a smoked salmon and maple terrine.
The narrative concludes with a heartwarming exchange between Sophie and the BFG, wishing each other a Merry Christmas, complemented by a voiceover from Stephen Fry, who invites viewers to seek Sainsbury’s expertise for a bountiful holiday season. This collaboration aims to inspire viewers to embrace joy and abundance in their festive celebrations.
In addition to the main advert, Sainsbury’s is actively working with Comic Relief to deliver over five million meals to families in need. This significant charitable effort is highlighted in a special version of the advert, underlining the retailer’s commitment to supporting communities and ensuring all can enjoy good food this Christmas.
Through creativity and collaboration, Sainsbury’s blends festive cheer with social responsibility in its latest Christmas campaign.
