In a significant recall affecting UK consumers, major supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Aldi have withdrawn certain pastry products from their shelves. This action follows fears that these products may contain pieces of metal and plastic, posing potential safety risks.
The products involved in the recall include popular items such as sausage rolls, steak slices, cheese & onion rolls, and meat pies. In total, twenty different product lines are impacted. This recall has been initiated by Compleat Food Group, the supplier responsible for these goods. The Food Standards Authority (FSA) was informed after a metal detector at Compleat Food Group identified contamination, which led to the immediate cessation of production lines for investigation, according to reports.
A representative from Compleat Food Group confirmed that once the faulty detection was rectified, production resumed as normal. However, as a precautionary measure, affected products were voluntarily recalled by several supermarkets.
Tesco has publicly acknowledged the issue, noting the presence of small pieces of blue plastic and metal in specific batches of chilled products. A spokesperson stated, ‘This could potentially pose a risk if consumed. Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused.’
Similarly, Sainsbury’s has taken steps to recall six pastry products under its own brand, emphasising the safety of customers as its top priority. In a statement, a Sainsbury’s representative expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to their consumers.
As a result of the recall, customers are advised to return any affected products to stores to receive a full refund, with no receipt required. This measure is intended to ensure consumer safety and address any potential health risks.
The recall demonstrates the commitment of UK supermarkets to consumer safety, ensuring swift action in response to potential risks.
