August witnessed a noticeable uptick in retail sales, driven primarily by warmer weather which positively influenced consumer behaviour.
- The Office for National Statistics reported a 1% increase in total retail sales volumes for August, the highest since July 2022.
- Clothing and footwear sectors experienced significant growth, with sales rising by 2.9% on July and 0.6% on August 2023.

- Other retail sectors such as furniture and household goods lagged as consumers favoured spending on experiences.
Rising temperatures played a crucial role in driving retail sales during August, as reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), with a 1% increase marking the best performance since July 2022. This trend was strongly supported by the clothing and footwear sectors, where sales increased by 2.9% over July and saw a year-on-year increase of 0.6%. Retailers have partly attributed this growth to end-of-season sales, alongside the favourable weather conditions.
Online retail in the clothing and footwear categories experienced a significant boost, with a 4.4% increase over the previous month, further emphasizing the positive impact of August’s weather. This upward trend highlights the blend of digital shopping convenience and seasonal consumer demand during warmer periods.
Kris Hamer, British Retail Consortium director of insight, reflected on August’s retail performance by stating: “With summer in full swing, sales growth picked up in August. Food, cosmetics, and fashion sales had a good month as people hosted family and friends for picnics and barbecues and prepared for summer holidays and other social events.” This insight underscores the influence of social and seasonal factors on retail activities.
Despite the general retail uplift, certain sectors such as furniture and household goods did not perform as well. Consumers appeared to prioritise spending on experiences and social activities over purchasing goods in these categories. The data from the ONS Retail Sales report provides a comprehensive view of the shifted consumer priorities during this period.
The data reflects how seasonal conditions can substantially impact consumer spending patterns, revealing shifting priorities in various retail sectors.
