Optimism among UK SMEs is on the rise, marking the third consecutive year of increasing confidence. Nearly 70% of business leaders feel positive about the future, reflecting a notable growth from previous years.
According to the annual Barometer survey, 71% of SMEs believe their business is in good shape, an increase observed over the past couple of years. This positive outlook is translating into strategic growth plans, particularly in enhancing customer engagement and adopting AI technologies.
Rising Confidence Among SMEs
The annual Barometer survey, conducted with the assistance of Small Business Saturday UK, gathered responses from 1,000 SME decision-makers and sole traders. The survey revealed that confidence among SMEs has grown significantly, with 69% of business leaders expressing optimism about their future.
This uptick in sentiment is most pronounced among micro enterprises, specifically businesses with 1-9 employees, which saw confidence increase from 62% in 2023 to 67% in 2024. The survey highlighted that nearly three-quarters (71%) of SMEs consider their businesses to be in good shape, showing a steady improvement over the past two years.
Growth-Focused Strategies
Over half (52%) of the surveyed SMEs plan to increase investment in their businesses over the next year. This investment is targeted primarily at improving customer engagement, which has become a major focus.
More than half (54%) of SMEs aim to enhance their communication with customers. Additionally, 42% plan to offer new services, and 33% are set to introduce more special offers to attract and retain clients.
Shift in Customer Priorities
Interestingly, SMEs now perceive customers to be less driven by price when making purchasing decisions.
Only 51% of respondents cited price as the main factor influencing purchases, down from 57% in 2023. This indicates a shift towards a more value-driven customer base, prioritising quality and service over cost.
Looking ahead, 57% of businesses expect stronger sales in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in previous years, further bolstering their optimistic outlook.
The Role of AI in SMEs
AI adoption is set to play a pivotal role in the growth strategies of UK SMEs. Nearly 45% of respondents indicated plans to integrate AI solutions into their operations over the next year, with medium-sized businesses leading this trend at 64%.
AI is being utilized across various functions, including marketing and content development, with 49% of SMEs employing AI to enhance these areas. Furthermore, 36% of businesses are using AI for customer service, and 34% are implementing it to streamline accounting processes.
