The West Midlands is taking a bold step towards a sustainable future with the latest cohort of green transport innovators.
Nineteen firms have been selected to join the Clean Futures accelerator, aiming to revolutionize transportation in the region.
Funding Secured for Green Transport Innovations
Nineteen small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from the West Midlands have secured a place in the new Clean Futures accelerator programme. Run by the London-based Connected Places Catapult, the accelerator supports companies aiming to address environmental challenges in the rail and automotive industries. These firms will receive up to £50,000 each, enabling them to trial innovative products and services over a six-month period.
The programme focuses on solutions related to manufacturing and assembly design, cost-effective clean transportation infrastructure, and the production, transport, and storage of alternative fuels. Such targeted efforts are expected to accelerate the transition to greener transportation, vital for reducing emissions in these sectors.
Bespoke Support and Networking Opportunities
In addition to funding, the programme offers bespoke technical and commercial support. This is facilitated through collaboration with the Black Country Innovative Manufacturing Organisation in Dudley and The Advanced Manufacturing Centre at Coventry University. Companies in the cohort can take advantage of state-of-the-art facilities to refine their projects.
Networking opportunities are also a key component. Participants will have showcasing opportunities to connect with industry and financial partners. This platform aims to build partnerships, allowing companies to enhance their market presence and access crucial investment channels.
Second Year Successes
Now in its second year, the Clean Futures accelerator has already demonstrated significant successes. The previous cohort saw 18 out of 20 SMEs engage in discussions with new clients about their innovations.
A total of £2.6 million has been secured through contracts or research and development funding. The commercial pipeline shows potential for an additional £43 million. Private investment contributions have reached £1.3 million, with another £27 million pending.

Clean Futures is part of the broader West Midlands Innovation Accelerator. This initiative is instrumental in enhancing the region’s innovation and research capabilities, seeking to spark commercial growth and investment.
The programme is designed to support the West Midlands in becoming a hub of the green industrial revolution. By fostering innovation, it aims to contribute significantly to the regional economy and environmental sustainability.
