Phillips, the renowned auction house, has partnered with HOFA (House of Fine Art) Gallery to present a groundbreaking exhibition that explores the intersection of digital technology and contemporary art. The exhibition, titled ‘SPACES’, is the inaugural showcase in HOFA’s new digital realities series and will debut at Phillips in London from 3rd to 10th October 2024 during the prestigious Frieze Art Fair.
Curated by Elio D’Anna, co-founder of HOFA Gallery, ‘SPACES’ will feature ten works by eight visionary artists who are pioneering the integration of advanced computing technologies with artistic expression. The exhibition aims to challenge conventional perceptions of art by highlighting the profound impact of digital innovation on creative practices.
“This series explores the evolving interplay between digital technology and contemporary art,” said D’Anna. “It showcases how artists are integrating AI and digital techniques into their work, revealing new possibilities for creative expression.”
Among the artists featured is Sougwen Chung, a Chinese-Canadian pioneer in AI art and one of TIME100’s top AI innovators. Chung will present Spectral, a dynamic installation where a robotic arm collaborates with the artist during the painting process. This work, the first of its kind acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum, exemplifies how machines can become creative partners in the artistic process.
Other highlights of the exhibition include the work of Krista Kim, a leading voice in digital consciousness art. Kim, founder of the Techism movement, has been a cultural leader at the World Economic Forum and was named one of UNESCO’s ’50 Minds for the Next 50′. At ‘SPACES’, Kim will showcase a triptych of her signature gradient works, created using digital software. These pieces, UV-printed on Trulife Plexi and mounted on Dibond, explore how technology can be a tool for mental wellness and cultural reflection.
Emily Xie, a New York-based artist, will also contribute to the exhibition with her innovative digital collage, Cresting Figure, which integrates generative AI with traditional Chinese embroidery techniques. Xie’s work, which has been displayed at venues such as the Singapore ArtScience Museum, offers a unique perspective on cultural heritage through the lens of modern technology.
Renowned Turkish-American media artist Refik Anadol will present Winds of Yawanawa #888, part of his NFT Data Painting series that merges weather data from the Amazonian Yawanawa tribe with artistic expressions from Yawanawa artists. The piece exemplifies how digital art can serve as a bridge between traditional cultures and technological advancement.
Phillips’ Deputy Chairwoman and Head of Private Sales, Miety Heiden, expressed her excitement about the collaboration. “Phillips is thrilled to partner with HOFA Gallery on this exhibition, which pushes the boundaries of contemporary art. ‘SPACES’ reflects our commitment to supporting artists whose practices incorporate cutting-edge technologies.”
The exhibition will be open to the public at Phillips in London, offering a rare opportunity to experience the fusion of art and technology at the forefront of the digital age.
