TV presenter AJ Odudu has been appointed as the latest high-profile Ambassador for the Trussell Trust, a leading anti-poverty charity in the UK. To celebrate her new role, Odudu visited Blackburn Foodbank, located in the community where she grew up, to learn more about its vital work in supporting local residents facing food insecurity.
The announcement comes at a time when food banks across the Trussell Trust network are experiencing unprecedented levels of need. Last year alone, these food banks distributed over 3.1 million emergency food parcels—nearly double the amount provided just five years prior. This surge highlights the growing reliance on food banks as many families struggle to afford basic necessities.
Odudu, known for her hosting duties on shows like Big Brother, first visited Blackburn Foodbank in 2022 and has been a committed supporter of the charity ever since. Her ongoing involvement includes raising funds during appearances on TV programmes, such as the quiz show Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.
As an Ambassador, Odudu aims to raise awareness about the solutions needed to eliminate hunger in the UK. She expressed her deep commitment to addressing food poverty, stating, “I know for a fact no one visits food banks unless they absolutely have to, and I just want to do everything within my power to support those facing hunger and hardship here in the UK.”
During her visit to the food bank, she observed the tireless work of local volunteers, describing it as “deeply moving.” She added, “The food bank shouldn’t need to be here; everyone should be able to afford the essentials. I’m proud to be a Trussell Ambassador, and I hope that everyone else will join me in playing their part in ending the need for food banks by donating, volunteering, or campaigning for the change needed.”
Emma Revie, Chief Executive Officer of the Trussell Trust, welcomed Odudu’s appointment, praising her warmth, empathy, and ability to connect with people. “We know that, like AJ, millions of people want a future where no one needs a food bank to survive,” Revie said. “Everyone has a part to play in achieving this, and if we all work together, then we can end hunger in the UK. Until then, food banks like Blackburn will continue to be there for anyone who needs their support.”
The Trussell Trust’s mission is to ensure that no one in the UK has to turn to a food bank to survive, and with ambassadors like AJ Odudu, they hope to raise awareness and mobilise communities to tackle food poverty. The visit and appointment come at a crucial time, highlighting the urgent need for collective action to combat the growing crisis of hunger in the UK.
As the charity continues its work, Odudu’s involvement signals a growing recognition of the importance of addressing food insecurity and supporting local communities. With her influence, the Trussell Trust hopes to inspire others to contribute to the fight against hunger in the UK.
