Japanese logistics giant Nippon Express Holdings (NXHD) has announced the acquisition of German contract logistics firm Simon Hegele in a move to bolster its presence in the healthcare sector across Europe. NXHD, which has a global network of logistics services, signed an agreement on 30 September 2024 to acquire all shares of Simon Hegele’s parent company, SH HoldCo GmbH, and make it a fully-owned subsidiary.
The deal marks a strategic expansion for NXHD into the specialised field of healthcare logistics, a key area of focus for Simon Hegele, which is known for providing customised logistics solutions to the healthcare industry. The acquisition is expected to combine Nippon Express’ international reach with Simon Hegele’s expertise, enabling both companies to offer more advanced and integrated services to their clients worldwide.
Strategic Partnership for Global Expansion
Simon Hegele, headquartered in Germany, has long been recognised for its innovative contract logistics services, particularly in the healthcare sector. The company provides a range of logistics services including the handling and transportation of medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and related supplies, which require high levels of precision and care. With Nippon Express as its new parent company, Simon Hegele will be able to leverage a vast international network, further enhancing its global operations.
Stefan Ulrich, CEO of Simon Hegele, welcomed the acquisition, emphasising the potential for growth through the partnership. “It was clear to us that we wanted to find a strategic partner that was a good fit for us, with a complementary service portfolio and a strong international presence,” said Ulrich. “We are certain that we have now found the ideal partner in NX Group.”
Ulrich added that maintaining Simon Hegele’s independence and agility was a priority, while the collaboration with Nippon Express will help the company develop tailored solutions for its globally active customers.
Expanding Global Healthcare Logistics
For Nippon Express, this acquisition reflects a broader strategy to strengthen its healthcare logistics capabilities. By bringing Simon Hegele into its fold, the Japanese firm aims to build on its existing network and expertise to deliver high-quality, healthcare-specific logistics services on a global scale. The company’s Director and Executive Officer, Mamoru Akaishi, expressed optimism about the new partnership.
“I am looking forward to moving forward on the same path towards the future with the Simon Hegele Group,” said Akaishi. “I believe that we can provide even greater value to our customers by combining NX Group’s global network capabilities with Simon Hegele’s advanced logistics expertise, especially in the healthcare sector.”
The acquisition is part of Nippon Express’ ongoing efforts to expand its presence in Europe, where it has already established significant operations. With Simon Hegele’s advanced logistics services, particularly in handling sensitive healthcare products, the Japanese firm is set to offer a broader range of solutions to its clients.
A Strong Future in Healthcare Logistics
As the healthcare industry continues to grow and globalise, demand for specialised logistics services is expected to rise. By joining forces with Simon Hegele, Nippon Express is positioning itself as a leader in this vital sector. The partnership is also seen as a key step in Nippon Express’ long-term strategy to become a top-tier global logistics provider, with a strong focus on healthcare and other high-demand sectors.
The acquisition has been finalised, and Nippon Express is expected to integrate Simon Hegele’s operations into its global network in the coming months.
