Leigh Leopards’ fairytale run in the Betfred Super League continued as they edged out hosts Salford Red Devils 14-6 in a thrilling elimination play-off clash. Marc Sneyd’s 28th-minute penalty goal for the Red Devils was all that separated the sides at the break after a furious and intense first half.
Tries from Josh Charnley, Gareth O’Brien, and Edwin Ipape saw Leigh Leopards win the first of the elimination play-offs in the Betfred Super League. Josh Charnley’s 248th Super League try, which was crucial for Leigh, was followed by Gareth O’Brien finishing under the posts, extending their lead further.
Charnley, however, was later stretchered off the field after injuring himself during a tackle. Despite this setback, Gareth O’Brien went over to extend the lead against Salford Red Devils, capitalising on a break by Edwin Ipape.
Papua New Guinean star Edwin Ipape’s solo score as the clock ticked over into the final 15 minutes proved enough to put Leigh just 80 minutes from a first Grand Final appearance. This came despite a late yellow card to Jack Hughes and an unconverted try by Ethan Ryan for Salford, who managed to score through Ryan in the 78th minute.
Leigh Leopards now travel to either Wigan Warriors or Hull KR in next week’s play-off semi-finals, pending the outcome of Warrington Wolves vs St Helens. This marks a challenging yet promising continuation of their remarkable season.
Leigh Leopards’ disciplined performance sees them advance to the Super League play-off semi-finals.
