The UK government has entered a partnership with the London-based startup Greenpixie to monitor the climate impact of its One Login service. This initiative is seen as a part of the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the sustainability of its digital infrastructure.
Greenpixie, founded in 2021 and located near Covent Garden, specialises in providing sustainability data for cloud services. The company will supply the government with precise data regarding the energy and water consumption necessitated by the servers running the One Login system. This level of detail is crucial for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), which seeks a deeper understanding of the environmental implications associated with this service.
One Login serves as a centralised portal for UK citizens to access various public services, streamlining processes and connecting users to different governmental departments. In this context, Greenpixie’s role is pivotal in assessing and providing insights into the ecological footprint of digital interactions.
Digital Minister Feryal Clark emphasised the dual objective of technological advancement and environmental stewardship. She highlighted the importance of gaining insights that enable the administration to manage environmental impacts effectively, while simultaneously offering citizens efficient service experiences. She remarked, ‘While we make the most of technology to overhaul public services, we must make sure we are leading by example in protecting our climate.’
Greenpixie’s CEO, John Ridd, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting the ongoing efforts to refine and advance the sustainability practices of One Login. He described the partnership as an opportunity to contribute to what aims to be the government’s most environmentally friendly digital service yet.
The collaboration between the UK government and Greenpixie marks a significant step towards embedding sustainability in public digital services.
