Accenture has implemented a new initiative designed to address the AI skills gap prevalent in the UK. Known as the ‘Regenerative AI’ scheme, it aims to provide free education and mentorship to over one million individuals of varying ages. By focusing on equipping people with essential AI skills, the programme intends to prepare the UK workforce for evolving technological demands.
A significant component of this initiative is directed at young individuals within the educational system and those actively seeking employment. The introduction of a specially developed course in collaboration with the Open University is a key aspect, designed to equip thousands of potential job seekers with practical skills in using Generative AI during their job search.
According to the Lloyds Banking Group ‘Essential Digital Skills’ survey, approximately 8.5 million adults within the UK lack basic digital skills. This skills deficit poses a substantial risk, potentially excluding large portions of the population from the educational, social, and economic benefits facilitated by AI advancements.
The issue of diversity within the tech industry is highlighted, with women representing less than 30% of the workforce, and individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds constituting less than 10%. Shaheen Sayed, Head of Accenture in the UK, Ireland, and Africa, stated, “The true accelerator for AI will be people and equipping the UK’s current and future workforce as well as the broader community with the skills to use it.”
Minister Sir Chris Bryant emphasised the transformative potential of AI, stating, “AI is poised to be a transformative force and ensuring people have the digital skills to match these opportunities is key to unlocking its potential and creating a workforce fit for the future. That’s why it is so important that these opportunities are available to everyone.”
Accenture’s initiative represents a significant step towards equipping the UK population with necessary AI skills to harness advanced technological opportunities.
